Hanover Coach Wins 100th Game
By Tomas La Porta Drago
On September 17, the Hanover JV Boys Soccer team won a hard-fought game 2-1 in overtime at Oyster River. This marked Coach Mike Callanan’s 100th victory while at Hanover. Callanan, who is in his seventh year as a coach at the school, has an astonishing win-loss record of 102-5, having won two more games since the milestone.
Callanan had several other accomplishments before coming out of retirement to take the job at HHS. During the 37 years that he coached at his alma mater, St. Johnsbury Academy, he topped 300 victories, eight league championships, and two Vermont state titles. He was also named Vermont Coach of the Year three times and received the Vermont Coaches’ Association Outstanding Service Award three times. As he has no plans to go back into retirement any time soon, one can only pity the teams that stand in his path of destruction.
