Help Whenever You Need It
In my experience as a student, the computer lab has never been an essential academic aid. With the “rebranding” of the computer lab, you may have assumed that the change is only in name; in this assumption, you would have missed out on a truly invaluable resource.
With an emphasis on peer tutoring and meeting individual academic needs, the Help Hub is a near-complete support resource. This system meets your individual needs by quickly connecting you with one of 17 peer tutors who have already struggled through the same assignments. The schedule ensures that for any period throughout the day, someone is likely ready and able to help with your specific questions.
In these cases, the benefits of peer tutoring really should not be understated. Peer tutors can offer critical insight into class expectations, difficulty, and common mistakes. Think about the most demanding class or test you have taken thus far in school. Now consider the benefits you would have realized had you been able to prepare with a future version of yourself that had already gone through the experience. Another advantage of this resource is the stress relief and general reassurance that comes with feeling confident in your most challenging classes. This system offers a much-improved alternative to searching (probably late at night) for non-specific academic resources that will never slow down to analyze and explain your specific challenges.
I stopped by the Help Hub and got a chance to talk with Mr. Buck, who, alongside Ms. Leader, works to ensure that the Help Hub offers support for both STEM subjects and the humanities. It’s clear from the former computer lab’s current environment that there is a lot of energy behind this new program, developed over the summer by Amy Good.
The atmosphere formed in the help hub is entirely conducive to all sorts of study, and here is an important point: this resource is not only for specific academic questions. If you need to coordinate a study plan, get in touch with someone, access resources, write a paper, or anything else, this is the place to get direction or have your questions answered as they present themselves. While certainly possible, you are not required to sign up for regular tutoring. You are welcome to stop by with your questions and no prior notice.
This new and exciting resource highlights the benefits we share as a unique learning community. We are all specifically capable in certain things and less in others. You may volunteer as a physics tutor while at the same time receiving help from your tutee who has a particular strength in math. We are all learning together, and the help hub allows us to share our talents and strengths as we benefit from each other.
