Postseason action dominated in Hanover High athletics last week. Both the boys and girls cross country teams crossed the top-6-team threshold at the Division II state meet in Manchester to advance the inter-divisional Meet of Champions next week. The 4th seeded girls varsity soccer team also pounded their way to the Division II semifinal following a two shutout wins in the first round and quarterfinal.

Some teams’ seasons ended last week as well. The 12th seeded girls varsity volleyball team was eliminated from the D-II playoffs by 5th seeded Portsmouth. Out on the soccer field, 5th seeded the varsity boys soccer team won a decisive victory against 13th seeded Nashua North in the first round only to fall against Pinkerton in the quarterfinal due to penalty kicks following two scoreless halves and two scoreless overtimes. The outcome of that quarterfinal game was considered controversial by some, as senior Sam Pych appeared to have kicked a goal at the end of the second overtime before the referees ruled the goal as having taken place after time expired.

The girls varsity field hockey team won the title of Division II runner-up (second place) after reaching the championship game for the first time since 2009 but then falling to 2nd seeded Windham 0-1 on a rainy Sunday night in Bedford, NH. Hanover came close to tying the game when a goal appeared to have been made, but it was nullified by officials due to the ball moving over the allowed height of 18 inches above the ground.

The varsity football team is now set to begin the playoffs after finishing the regular season with an undefeated (8-0) record after a surprising 22-12 victory against John Stark.
